Rockstar Games unveiled the inaugural trailer for Grand Theft Auto VI, shedding light on the series' first female lead character and returning to a familiar setting. The launch, originally slated for Wednesday, was hastened to Tuesday after a social media leak. But when is GTA VI hitting the shelves?
As of now, the slated release is for the year 2025. Considering the series' historical pattern, which has seen previous releases in the fourth quarter of their respective years, a two-year wait for the game seems probable.

While the initial five entries of the series saw a new GTA every two years, recent games have experienced substantial expansion in scale, detail, and budget. Blockbusters nowadays commonly undergo development periods exceeding eight years. Since the release of Grand Theft Auto V, Rockstar was also engrossed in developing Red Dead Redemption 2, released in 2018.
Footage of GTA VI was leaked online earlier, hinting at a 2024 launch, but it seems the wait will be slightly longer. Rockstar announced the game will debut on Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5.
Why is the release of GTA VI such a monumental event? These open-world crime dramas have ascended to cultural milestones ever since the emergence of Grand Theft Auto III in 2001. The recently launched trailer amassed over 4 million views on YouTube within hours.

Grand Theft Auto V, with a reported budget of approximately $US265 million ($400 million), originally released in 2013. It has maintained top-seller charts owing to new platform versions and the popular GTA Online mode. Currently, it stands as the second-highest-selling game, with over 190 million units sold. Minecraft holds the number one spot.
While the series has faced criticism for its depiction of sex, violence, and drug use, it has garnered critical acclaim for its narratives, expansive worlds, and open-ended gameplay. GTA V was among the first games to receive an R18+ rating in Australia.

The setting for GTA VI appears to be a return to Vice City, based on Miami, Florida, showcased in the trailer. Though Vice City was set in the '80s, this iteration seems to be placed in modern times, featuring cityscapes, suburbs, and remote landscapes reminiscent of the Florida Everglades.
The playable area in GTA games has a tendency to expand with each iteration. With previous titles reaching around 80 square kilometers, speculations arise about additional areas or even other cities. Rockstar claims this version represents the most significant and immersive evolution of the series yet.
The trailer hints at the female lead, Lucia, seen in prison and engaging in a robbery and high-speed chases. It seems to tease a Bonnie and Clyde style dynamic but reveals little else. This could be a tonal shift for the series, which has faced criticism for its portrayal of women.
The trailer is rich in TikTok-style snippets, highlighting peculiar occurrences and suggesting a focus on the "Florida man" trope. The incorporation of influencers and online trends echoes the developer's inclination to satirize American culture.
With glimpses of street races, strip clubs, and various vehicles, the trailer aligns with typical GTA content. The focus on music, a hallmark of GTA: Vice City, remains uncertain based on the trailer, set to Love Is A Long Road by Tom Petty.
While official confirmation remains pending, the inclusion of online multiplayer in GTA VI is highly anticipated. The lucrative GTA Online continues to rake in substantial revenue even a decade post-release, chiefly from microtransactions.
